“Rebirth was only the beginning.”

After its audacious debut in 2023, Poor Things redefined gothic surrealism with its fearless exploration of identity, desire, and liberation. Now, visionary director Yorgos Lanthimos returns with Poor Things 2 (2025) — a continuation that dares to ask: what happens when freedom itself becomes a prison, and when creation begins to outgrow its creator?

The Story

Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), having embraced her independence and carved her own life out of chaos, now finds herself at a crossroads. No longer bound by innocence, she wrestles with the consequences of her unchained freedom — questions of morality, legacy, and what it means to shape a world that still seeks to contain her.

Her life once again collides with the lingering presence of Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), whose genius — and scars — continue to haunt her. But as whispers of his unfinished experiments surface, Bella discovers she may not have been the only one given a second chance at life.

Meanwhile, Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), broken yet unrepentant, re-emerges with schemes of his own. Drawn back into Bella’s orbit, he becomes both her foil and her shadow — a reminder of the chaos she once reveled in, and a test of the boundaries she now seeks to define.

As Bella encounters others touched by Baxter’s grotesque experiments — beings caught between brilliance and monstrosity — she must confront a terrifying question: is true freedom possible, or are we all bound by the designs of those who created us?

The Cast

  • Emma Stone as Bella Baxter: unapologetic, brilliant, and uncontainable — her journey now pushes beyond liberation into questions of creation, morality, and responsibility.
  • Willem Dafoe as Dr. Godwin Baxter: part father, part tormentor, part God — whose legacy of creation refuses to stay buried.
  • Mark Ruffalo as Duncan Wedderburn: charming, grotesque, and desperate — a man who thrives in Bella’s chaos, even as he’s undone by it.

The Style & Tone

Yorgos Lanthimos expands his surreal canvas with:

  • Grotesque fairytale imagery — decaying mansions, dreamlike landscapes, and experimental creations that blur the line between human and monster.
  • Dark humor and biting satire — skewering society’s hypocrisies while exploring the extremes of freedom and power.
  • Erotic, chaotic energy — Bella’s unfiltered pursuit of life colliding with the grotesque consequences of unchecked desire.

The Themes

  • Beyond liberation: once free, what does one do with freedom?
  • Legacy and creation: the haunting consequences of Baxter’s experiments and Bella’s role in shaping their future.
  • Chaos vs. order: whether true identity thrives in liberation, or whether it requires structure.

The Legacy

Poor Things (2023) stunned audiences with its fearless performances and Lanthimos’ visionary direction. The sequel dares to go further — not simply revisiting Bella’s liberation, but challenging the very idea of freedom, creation, and identity in a grotesque world that resists easy answers.
